Introduction
Nowadays Internet Of Things(IoT) is just a part of our daily routine. It is a rapidly evolving technology that is changing the way we live, we work, we do every single thing in our life. IoT is making the interconnection between humans and technology very efficient. Currently, IoT is everywhere. Also, the future of IoT is very vast. It is one of the high-rise building of technology, and every building has its foundation and pillars. So, today we are going to learn about those four pillars of IoT. LETS GO!
Before knowing about the four pillars of IoT, You can learn a basic of IoT in more detail in the below blogs:
What is IoT?
IoT is nothing but a system of interconnected devices. This system is embedded with sensors, software, and network connectivity to allow them to communicate and exchange data with other devices and systems over the internet.
Pillar 1: M2M
M2M is nothing but Machine to Machine communication which refers to automating the exchange of data between devices or machines without any manual effort. M2M enables the devices to smart communicate with each other and exchange data in real time.
This communication plays a crucial role in IoT as it enables machines to work together seamlessly and share data in real-time. This leads to enhanced automation and efficiency in various industries, such as healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing.

Pillar 2: RFID
RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) is nothing but a wireless technology that uses radio waves to identify and track objects or people. RFID technology uses radio waves to identify or track an object.
How Does RFID Work?
There are 3 components of RFID, a reader, tag, and antenna. The tag contains a small ship that is used to store the data. Radio signal waves are released by the reader, and are received by the tag. An antenna is used for receiving and transmitting the signals.
When a reader sends out a wave signal to the tag then an antenna on the tag receives that signal and responds back to the reader that response contains information and the tag will store that information in a microchip.

Pillar 3: WSN
WSN stands for Wireless Sensor Network and is nothing but a collection of sensors that are distributed over an area to measure physical and environmental conditions. The sensors are connected wirelessly to each other to communicate to form a network. This network can transmit and receive data from a central location. In the central location, the data can be analyzed and used for different applications.
There are some benefits of WSN as follows:
- Cost Effective:
WSN is a cost-effective solution to manage and monitor different environmental conditions. - Real-time data collection:
WSN provides real-time data collection which helps you with quick decision-making. - Scalability:
WSN is very scalable, you can add sensors as many as required. - Energy Efficient:
WSN is an energy-efficient solution where you can use battery-operated sensors that can last for years.

Pillar 4: SCADA
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is nothing but a system that is designed to collect data from sensors, equipment, and other devices, and to provide real-time monitoring and control capabilities to operators and engineers. SCADA helps a system of software and hardware components that are used to monitor and control industrial processes such as manufacturing, energy production, and transportation
How does it work?
SCADA system consists of 3 main components those are as follows:
- The field devices
- The RTUs (Remote Terminal Units)
- Central Computer or HMI (Human-Machine Interface)
The field devices include sensors, actuators, and other devices that are used to collect data from the environment or to control processes. The RTUs are responsible for collecting and processing the data from the field devices and transmitting it to the central computer. The HMI is the user interface that allows operators and engineers to monitor and control the processes remotely.

Conclusion
IoT is a rapidly growing technology that has the potential to transform the way we live and work. Its four pillars. M2M, RFID, WSN, and SCADA are enabling the devices to connect, monitor, and control valuable insights. These four pillars play a vital role in IoT. It forms the foundation of IoT.
